After missile and nuclear tests and uranium enrichment, the U.S. sanctions North Korean firms while Pyongyang reverses, making overtures. It’s not an accident, it’s a pattern of strategic disengagement.
- #Vanity Fair, of all publications, has a lengthy article on North Korea’s counterfeiting operations, including Office 39. Well worth a read. (h/t NE Asia Matters)
- #The Chosun Ilbo has an article about a new book by Chang Jin-song (formerly affiliated with the North Korean Workers' Party) that details Kim Jong-il private life, including the inside scoop on all his lady friends. According to Chang, one unfortunate young lady to get Kim's attention was, "brutally executed after she spurned Kim's persistent advances and fell in love with another man."
- #Gizmodo has an excellent array of Kim Jong-il photos; In Which We Provoke Kim Jong Il in 77 Offensive and Hilarious Ways. Some are sure to become often used classics.

wow! that was great.
For a few seconds in the middle, I saw actual footage of KJI speaking… I’ve never heard his legendary uncharismatic voice before… does anyone know where one could find the entire speech?

I wonder what a North Korean would say if they saw this?
Would they get that it was a joke and laugh too, or would they be shocked, angry, confused or what?
I doubt they have comedy shows on TV there, and if they do, it’s probably not political satire…

A North Korean wouldn’t understand it since the Onion spliced together various video clips in Korean, including some of ROK President Lee Myung-bak, that don’t match the English subtitles.
But if the Korean were correct, my guess is that not many would fall for it.

Richardson: Thanks for sharing. I saw this earlier on the Onion’s Web site and it was great fun to watch this again.
wanomin: I think the clip of KJI speaking is from the 2000 “Sunshine” meeting in Pyongyang with then ROK President Kim Dae Jung when they “met the press.”
