The Whole Courage and Martyrdom Thing

by Richardson ~ July 26th, 2007. Filed under: Asides, Korean Culture, Religion.

A particularly irreverent former colleague (he’s a Ron Paul supporter, for whatever that’s worth) writes: “I guess South Korean Christians are the only kind left that care for the whole courage and martyrdom thing… My church, on the other hand, is content to watch Al Gore movies and sing the opening song from Pocahontas. Perhaps if more Christians in the West demonstrated such conviction I might not be contemplating a conversion to Odinism.”

A Christian can choose courage. Being a martyr is given by God. (I’m a Ron Paul supporter for whatever that’s worth.)

I think he was bemoaing, in his irreverent way, the way mainstream Christianity has become so mundane in the U.S. as a contrast to the faith of evangelicals in Korea.

Of course, evangelism is strong and alive in the U.S. Some folks even argue that we are now entering another period of great Revival.

Again, I’ll push The Rise of Christianity. A church is powerful (avoids free riders) to the extent that it is in tension to the surrounded society. American Mainstream Protestantism, especially, has given up on the idea that it should be different from the society of its members, and so is in steep decline.

All right, you got me. I will put the book on my summer reading list.
