“Sleepless Nights in the Land of Morning Calm: The Soju Report: “Shiri” “The proper transliteration of the title should actually be “Swiri”. “

Don’t be fooled by the spelling. Ask your wife “What’s a swiri?” and you will get a blank look. Then ask her, “What’s a shiri?” and you will likely be told that it is a kind of fish. Of course, the English /sh/ is stronger than the Korean /s/ variant, but “shiri” is still a closer approximation of the true pronunciation than “swiri.”

BTW, Richardson, did you notice the story “US Alleges North Korea Is Misusing Aid for the Poor” on p. A11 of this morning’s (Sat.) Washington Post?

The text on Shiri was from the post linked to, but I’d Romanize it as “Shwiri,” and did confirm that with my wife (not the correct way, but how it actually sounds – the ‘w’ is muted, but the ‘h’ is easy to hear)!

I did see that, but was taking a blogging break Saturday.
