Once Again, WordPress Upgrade Not Smooth

by Richardson ~ May 29th, 2007. Filed under: Administration.

Update 2: Did some testing with the plug-in referred to below. It appears to work, but with some glitches, so I’ll be waiting to do the final upgrade to WP 2.2.

Update: If you use any K2 based theme, you’ll need this plug-in to disable widgets in WP 2.2, at least until K2 works this issue (the dev groups are aware of this).

Original post: Once again upgrading to the latest version of WordPress – from 2.1.3 to 2.2 in this case – has caused theme functionality to fatally clash with core files, forcing a restore to a previous version. The new widget support is the culprit in this case as it’s now declared in a WP file, but also in my theme. Looks like a test blog is in on the menu… but not tonight. I’ll post note for anyone using a K2 variant with widgets in the sidebar that had issues with 2.2.

I tried upgrading a few weeks ago — and did my typical angry ranting blogging about how screwed up it was (each time)…

The rants even drew the attention of a guy who blogs about Word Press (thus proving someone’s “If you call a guy as ass long enough….” theory….)…

I even ended up giving him the password to the kingdom to make the upgrade himself, and he came back to say that Yahoo! had made it impossible to move WP up. He advised I move elsewhere…

    ….I’m not…..until I have to…

I’m happy with the changes I made in the look-n-feel several months ago - mainly with my blogroll — and I’m staying put…

My wife and I are tired of relocating — and I’m going to settle down on my blog and site too - except for new additions to the main usinkorea site (like the NK stuff)….

I would recommend MediaTemple.net for hosting. Although nothing can be done about K2 based themes not working with the latest version of WordPress (note: download the nightly build of K2, it works, but is technically beta), the installation and upgrade of WordPress itself is totally automated, and no more manual upgrading either - just click the upgrade button in your control panel and sit back and relax.

Certainly 20$ a month is more than most bloggers want to pay, but for that price you get 100gb of storage, 1tb of bandwidth, and a virtually un-crashable server.

    USinKorea,
I find it hard to believe that Yahoo would make it impossible to upgrade WP, and have to question the judgment of the person who told you that.

I know what you mean about moving hosts. I moved (a long time ago) from Yahoo to LunarPages, and finally to Bluehost. Also moved the Korea Liberator from LP to BH. But I have no complaints about BH, at least for now.

    Darin,
I’m using TripleK2, so the K2 beta’s aren’t what I need, though others may find them useful if they’re using the regular K2 theme.

This site is hosted at bluehost.com which also has the one-click upgrade via Fantastico (cPanel). Usually this works ok, and I always disable plug-ins and do a full SQL & theme backup before doing that.

I don’t know. I looked at the guy’s blog before deciding to email him asking him to take a look under the hood. He seemed to know about it.

I get my blogging capability as part of my overall small business plan.

On the control panel, it says WordPress is supposed to be updating automatically for me, but it seems the version I am using is rather old…

Whichever the case, I’m happy enough with it……I didn’t change the look of the blog for a long-long time. I guess I get me creative kick taken care of by working on other things like fully built webpages or the You Tube edits or something on the anti-US/USFK end…..I’ve never been much of a tinkerer with my blog…

It’s alright as long as the info is there. The content is what counts.

    Jack,
You’re right, but for me tweaking the platform is half the fun.
