One North Korean player fell during the match and was taken to a nearby hospital. Doctors were astonished to find the boy’s hamstring was about to collapse and operated. Strange things began to happen the following day. Several other North Korean boys fell to the ground during training.
Impressed beyond their imagination by the facilities, medicine, equipment and, most of all, by the quality medical care provided by the South Korean hospital, the young players wanted to get their long-neglected conditions treated by South Korean doctors.
“It was apparent that the boys wanted to make the most of their stay here,” said one bemused hospital staff member. “Of course, we were happy to treat them and everybody here wanted to give something to them, training uniform, shoes, etc.,” he said.
Finally, North Korean head coach Ahn chastised the players and issued a stern warning that if they fell or had an accident they would be punished. The parade of injuries immediately stopped.
