Reactor Shutdown Deadline Likely a Meltdown
by Richardson ~ April 13th, 2007. Filed under: Diplomacy, Six-Party Talks. With the funds apparently just sitting there waiting for the North Korean’s to pick them up, North Korea is saying it will see if that’s actually so:
“A DPRK (North Korea) financial institution concerned will confirm soon whether the measure is valid. . . The DPRK remains unchanged in its will to implement the February 13 agreement and will also move when the lifting of the sanction is proved to be a reality.”
Meantime it’s less than an hour away from midnight – and 14 April, the deadline – in Pyongyang, and nothing has apparently been done to even initiate the Yongbyon reactor shutdown.
Then only good thing I see out of all this is related to:
The sense of optimism among Americans about the prospects for North Korea giving up its nuclear program was almost infectious.
Hopefully North Korea’s dragging its feet to the sweetest deal its going to get will mercilessly crush the misplaced optimism among many of those on the left that have called for “diplomacy” and engagement” for so long, and eventually open the way to a more realistic approach to the problem.
