Petitioning the UNHCR to ensure rights of NK Refugees

by Richardson ~ March 15th, 2007. Filed under: Activism, Defectors & Refugees, Human Rights, UN.

It’s been brought to my attention that there is a new online petition to put pressure on the “United Nations to adhere to the commitments of the 1951 Convention regarding the Status of Refugees,” particularly in regard to North Koreans being forcibly repatriated by China.

China has ignored its obligations under the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and the supplemental Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees of 1967, and the UNHCR has not stood its ground.

I don’t know if a petition will make much difference to the UNHCR or to the Chinese in the short term, but it could at least raise awareness. Note; after you “sign” the petition you’ll be routed to a donation area, but at that point you’ve already signed and do not need to donate.

thanks so much for supporting the petition! We have thousands of signatures already… and don’t worry… we have a “plan” to get the petition to get more attention once we reach our # goal…

    thanks again.

Looks like 127 signatures to me, not thousands.
