Uberprotestor Cindy Sheehan has made her voice heard in the Pyongtaek Base Consolidation fight.

We hate you! Protect us!

Clearly going into this knowing nothing about the situation, they didn’t even bother to make their own signs. Or, if they did, they forgot F7…

(Excerpts after the jump)

A group of US peace activists led by Cindy Sheehan staged a protest outside the headquarters of American troops, urging a halt to the relocation of US military bases in South Korea.

The 18 protesters … rallied outside Yongsan Garrison after their request to see the commander in chief of US forces in Korea, General Burwell Bell, was turned down.

They tried to make their way through dozens of South Korean riot police carrying shields who were blocking access to the gate.

Shouting slogans such as “Stop US military base expansion!” and “Stop repression in Pyeongtaek!” the protesters held up their US passports and asked police to get out of their way.

“Believe me, we will be passing along these concerns (of villagers) to the Pentagon, to the Congress, to the people of America and we will be doing every thing we can as Americans to correct this situation in South Korea,” Sheehan told journalists.

Medea Benjamin, founder of Code Pink, a US women’s peace organization, said: “There is no way that I feel my family will be more secure or that Korean families will feel more secure by expanding the Camp Humphreys base (in Pyeongtaek) and taking land from people who have farmed there for generations.”

The group travelled to Pyeongtaek on Monday and joined some 100 people from Daechuri village for their 820th consecutive candlelight vigil against the expansion of the base…

I wonder if she’ll also be spreading the news to Americans about the violent protests and attempts to topple a statue of the man who helped enable the freedom of speech on display?

The banner that appears behind them in some of the other photos appears to read:

    자유주의 전쟁을 반대하는 재미협의
    FTA저지 범국인 총궐기 참가단 기자!

But the translation doesn’t appear to mention anything about the “FTA Obstructing Nationwide Rally”, or are my translating skills that rusty?

An irony here is that the birth of Pyeongtaek means the closure and consolidation of dozens of U.S. military sites throughout South Korea, a reduction of overall land usage, and a reduction of military personnel. Which means, in effect, she’s protesting what she’s asking for.

Stay tuned for her photos wearing a nork helmet posing on a 57mm antiaircraft gun.

And she won’t be nearly as young or photogenic.

She is a ‘useful idiot’. Whatever her objections to the war in Iraq, consorting with anti American elements is reprehensible.

Brandishing a US passport as if it was a credential giving the holder the right to pass freely anywhere s/he wants to go is imperialism in action at its worst. She was acting as if she wanted to prove to the world that the US is an imperialist power, she being a prime specimen US imperialist taking advantage of imperial perquisites by ordering the locals to yield to a representative of the imperial power. She would have been right at home as a deranged (“wacko”) imperialist in the world of 100 years ago giving orders to natives, who are obviously her inferiors, to do something they are not about to do.

Her statement that “we will be passing along these concerns (of villagers) to the Pentagon, to the Congress, to the people of America” reflects only the smallest amount of arrogance. Was that the imperial WE of Victoria? She acts as if she thinks that she would be telling anyone with an interest something they did not already know much better than she does. A lieutenant leading a platoon would have no reason to give her the time of day except, if he was Korean, possibly to arrest her. The US commanding general would have less than no reason, if that were possible, to lend any dignity to her babbling.

The comments so far are all right, except probably she is not a useful idiot. To be eligible for the appellation “useful idiot” she would have to have substantially more knowledge, demonstrate far greater ability to think (adn sepll), and actually be useful to someone.
