Republican Civil War on Immigration

Republicans on Immigration: The War Within
By James J. NaEgged on by more illegal immigrant protests, the cantankerous debate about immigration policy continues in Washington, as President Bush and legislators of both parties struggle to reach a grand bargain, the mother of all immigration reforms.
A compromise has been difficult to achieve, in part because the Democrats have taken the classic posture of an opposition party — they oppose whatever the Republicans advocate. Meanwhile Democratic allies impugn the latter as nativists, or worse racists. Although this tactic is politically convenient for the Democrats, it also abdicates the leadership on the issue to the Republicans.
Alas, the GOP has not forged a clearly defined initiative to inspire the public, because the party is racked by vehement internal divisions. The Republicans are, indeed, nearing a civil war — not a North-versus-South type in which one is expected to triumph over the other after a scrap, but a Beirut-style multi-faction imbroglio.

This is a great blog.
Here’s another unqualified 2 cents of mine.
The politics over this issue has gotten so sick. Both parties are playing chicken, waiting for the other to say or do something that can be used against them to achieve the most important goal for all of them, which is, to win the next election. Democrats rely on the old faithful, tried and true approach of saying that Republicans are racist bigots that want white power to reign over all non-whites. And this works very well. It’s a sick lie. Democrats might as well air commercials around the world and in Mexico that say “Come over, vote for us, and we’ll give you their money!”
On the other hand, a lot of whites in the USA are thinking, “Oh great… let’s let another large group of people in the country that hate white people and want to further the cultural genocide being waged by the far left in the USA.”
So while America is having an identity crisis, it’s a free party for all that want to come because it can hardly define what it’s for anymore without fear that defining that would invite whatever condemnation that would follow!
It’s all politics of fear. The Republicans are doing it, as well, putting out the message that illegal aliens are drug cartel criminals that want to annex the SW USA as part of Greater Aztlan. That they are going to come to the USA and have eight kids running wild making lots of noise and breaking stuff, taking up resources, and eventually make spanish the official language.
Something interesting… I don’t think the far left realizes that most of the Hispanic immigrants have major Christian values and are very family oriented. I don’t think that the Christian right wing demographic has understood this either. I live in San Francisco where there are tons and tons of Hispanic immigrants. I can say that I get nothing but warm vibes from these people. They work their asses off and are great people. No more criminal element than any other segment of the population from what I know.
People are so fear based. I don’t think America will be importing intolerance and bigotry like is happening with the Europeans.
I wonder if the immigration issue has been put off until after the Mexican elections for fear of sparking a backlash putting left-wing, López Obrador, into power.
Enough on that. I’m interested on others comments.

“Perhaps what the GOP needs to unite again is the bitter taste of defeat.”
At which point they can take the classic posture of an opposition party — opposing whatever the Democrats advocate?
Much like Rove’s latest strategy of “support the President or the Democrats will win”, the immigration debate has simply become politics for politics sake.
The GOP has a majority in both houses as well as the Executive branch and a sympathetic Judicial branch How about taking a stance on a policy and implementing it? Some leadership on the issue might actually score more points with the general electorate than the current flim-flamming.

WTF? I have 2 kids born in USA. Nah, not anti-immigrant as 1 being myself (long ago became US citizen and damn proud of it). Just can’t stand the damn illegals demanding to get legalized for breaking the law. Not to mention illegal alien LOSERS peddling sex and drugs in Koreatown (and embarass those doing legit biz via well publicized prostition sweeps).
PS - still trying to get that green card, yeh?
