“Seoul Train” at American University

Vivian Lee, student activist at American University who organized the Thursday evening viewing of “Seoul Train” reports:

… the film was a clutcher to most of the audience, I think. A close friend approached me after and acclaimed the film. At first I took it as a hearty joke only because this friend has a bit of a “tough heart”, which is not to say she is insensitive. But when she told me that she was shaking, and after seeing her goosebumps, I knew that this film opened her eyes. And mine, also. Right after the film ended, there was a continual hand-raising session to ask questions. Jim is a great speaker; he answered us in a very comprehendible and factly way. Some of the questions that were asked were similiar to “What has the UNHCR done, and why isn’t it fufilling its mandate?” and “Those [activists, escapees] in the film, do they fear for their disclosed identity?”

Many in the audience took the NK Freedom Rally flyers with them, so I hope to see them on Friday. A group of friends and I are planning to screen the film again at the beginning of the school year. By then, we hope to have formed a campus club based on NK human rights.

We viewed this movie last quarter at the UW in my Korean World Politics class. I am not Korean, but many of the students in the class were. You could hear sniffles and tissue rips throughout the entire film. The film brings no revelation, but what it does bring is the pictures, stories, and film of the horror our imaginations cannot complete.

Just for clarification, “Josh” is not me. I do, however, agree with Josh’s general observation.
