Hill to DPRK; Time for a Self-Criticism

by Richardson ~ September 28th, 2005. Filed under: Diplomacy, Six-Party Talks.

On the agenda:

The next thing North Korea needs to do is to tell the international community where its nuclear arms facilities are, the U.S. chief negotiator in six-party denuclearization talks Christopher Hill said Wednesday. Hill also told reporters there could be trouble ahead if North Korea in the next round of talks refuses to admit to a uranium enrichment program Washington alleges it operates. [emphasis added]

Aside from the LWR issue, this will also be a hurdle, since North Korea has denied it since former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly brought it up to NK Foreign Minister Kang Seok-ju in October 2002. Or rather Kang admitted it to Kelly, thereafter North Korea has denied it. However, others involved have acknowledged North Korea’s role.

On a side note, ‘self-criticism’ is common to all socialist-communist states and is a mandatory part of North Korea’s political indoctrination (read: brainwashing) classes for citizens. American POWs were even forced to do this during the Korean War.

At any rate, things are moving forward very slowly, for now.
