Stranger Than Fiction; DPRK’s Demand to End Food Aid

by Richardson ~ September 23rd, 2005. Filed under: Defectors & Refugees, Human Rights, North Korea.

Governments and humanitarian aid organizations are now in the bizarre situation of deciding how to respond to North Korea’s demand that the World Food Program (WFP) end aid shipments to that nation, even though it is on the brink of a new famine:

The United States will discuss with relevant nations how to respond to North Korea’s renunciation of humanitarian aid… “We will be talking to our partners in the international community about what the appropriate response there would be to this request from North Korea”…The latest WFP emergency report, issued a week ago, said North Korean authorities informed the U.N. agency that all food distribution and monitoring activities under the current emergency program should terminate by the end of November.

We are perhaps witnessing the point from which a potential famine becomes a full-fledged crisis. This has been in the news for awhile and has been especially well covered by Joshua at OneFreeKorea (and here).
