HELL THAWS, PART ONE; NK RENEGES
by Richardson ~ September 19th, 2005. Filed under: Six-Party Talks.Suspense is overrated (as in, ‘when would NK break the agreement this time?’). This is why no ones trusts North Korea – this was literally faster than the Britney Spears wedding:
North Korea said Tuesday it will return to the international nonproliferation regime and allow inspections by the U.N. nuclear watchdog only after receiving a light-water reactor from the United States… “What is most essential is, therefore, for the U.S. to provide light-water reactors (LWRs) to the DPRK as soon as possible as evidence proving the (U.S.’s) substantial recognition of the (DPRK’s) nuclear activity for a peaceful purpose.” The statement went on to say that the U.S. should not dream that the North will scrap its nuclear deterrent before providing a light-water reactor, a basis of mutual trust. [emphasis added]
The U.S. will give North Korea a LWR, I don’t know – never. China will not be happy, and SK President Roh looks like a fool, as usual. Of course this could just be a tactic leading to ultimate agreement - but some who should know doubt it. Tomorrow brings another headline…

They wasted no time, did they? I could be wrong, but I’m getting the impression that Washington’s patience has run its course so we’ll see what comes next.

I agree - but we can’t do much if China blocks the security council… not many options.
